ABOUT THIS WEBLOG

The purpose of my trip was to take up an invitation to spend a week with best mate of 43 years, also from Melbourne, who owns a modest apartment in the Slovenian coastal town of Piran, on the Adriatic Coast.

My trip was from July 18 to August 11 2016, starting and finishing at Melbourne's international airport. The Slovenian segment was from July 29 to August 6, which took us through some of Western Slovenia's spectacular alpine scenery.

The European part of my trip commenced in Milan (Italy) whence I travelled by train through to Trieste, on the Slovenian border.

After leaving Slovenia, I travelled from Ljubljana through to Vienna, where I spent a few days, before flying back to Melbourne.

SLOVENIA - Postojna Cave

A typical feature
Postojna Cave is a 24.12 km long karst cave system near Postojna, southwestern Slovenia. It is the second-longest cave system in the country as well as one of its top tourism sites. The caves were created by the Pivka River.

The Train

A Cave feature
Access to the Cave is by road - a large carpark is at the resort. It may also be reached by bus from Ljubljana, about one hour travel. The bus stop is in the town of Postojna, and from there it is about a 1 km walk to the main entrance, with good views towards the mountains. A local bus runs every hour as an alternative to walking.

It is cold in the Cave and visitors are urged to wear warm clothing.

Info Board near Cave Entrance
Visitors are taken to the cave system from the resort in small open carriages by an electric train. then undertake a 3 km walk in groups of about 50 people, accompanied by a guide, who narrates the history and features.
